mother earthGaia is the living, evolving, enduring body of Mother Earth. She comprises the physical and spiritual manifestations of our planet: the forests, mountains, oceans, rivers; the animals and plants, the fungi, bacteria and viruses, from the immense to the microscopic; as well as all the spiritual beings and realms of the Sacred Land.

Thus, Gaia inevitably includes humanity, in our creative greatness and our misguided destructiveness: humanity in our perilous present; ancestral humanity from the past; and humans of the future, wherever it is that we’re headed.

Gaia is continuously engendering all these levels, all these strands, to be in a dynamic state of balance, to maintain the healthy, resilient wholeness inherent in the earth’s deepest being and our own.

We can participate in this balance as we learn to loosen our attachment to the human-created world and attune with the regenerative Green World of Gaia, which illuminates our own most authentic self.

What are Seeds, Really?

Many people speak of planting good seeds for the future. What does this really mean?

There is certainly the level of planting literal seeds, within the practices of indigenous agriculture, permaculture, bio-dynamic gardening and other technologies that seek to go “with the grain” of Nature’s creatures, cycles and laws.

But when we consider planting less tangible “seeds”—seeds to help birth a new, regenerative future for the earth and humanity—it’s not so easy to envision what this might look like. What “crops” do we want to grow? How do we manifest the seeds for them? How do we plant them? How will the seeds know when and how to sprout? Once growing, where will their necessary nourishment come from?

This blog is dedicated to exploring these questions, on behalf of a beautiful, harmonious and life-enhancing future for all of Gaia.

Acting Like We Have Relatives

I’ve been told that the Dineh people of the desert southwest describe someone who has gotten grievously off-track in his life and behavior by saying: “He’s acting like he doesn’t have any relatives.” Among ancestral peoples, someone who acts like he or she doesn’t have relatives—someone who behaves as if they are not linked to their life-honoring ancestral ways, and who disrespects and rejects the human and non-human members of their … [Read More...] about Acting Like We Have Relatives

Green Hearts, Green Love

When I was about 9 years old, another girl and I were discussing what our favorite color was. My little friend, in a burst of childish patriotism, dramatically declaimed that her favorite colors were red, white and blue. I replied unhesitatingly that my favorite color was green—and that it was “underneath” all the other colors. We wouldn’t even have red, white and blue, I declared, if we didn’t have green. Recalling this conversation more than … [Read More...] about Green Hearts, Green Love

I am a sacramental ceremonialist on behalf of Gaia

I grew up roaming the mountains and mesas of northern New Mexico. Out there I came to know that the earth and its creatures and places are not only alive, intelligent and beautiful, but are an essential part of who I am. I also learned firsthand about the spiritual beings of the Sacred Land, and felt their promptings and protective presence for years before I even knew a language to describe it.

I was intrigued and excited by the Gaia Hypothesis—which proposes that the entire planet is a dynamic, self-regulating being—when it was first explicated 50 years ago. I found this idea both radical and obvious. I’ve always known that there is a living, interconnected presence in Nature, a vibrant physical and spiritual wholeness, grounded in both change and continuity, ever seeking harmony and balance.

After a lifetime of earth-centered explorations, I’ve come to focus my entire spiritual life around Gaia Herself—the vast, vital, planetary being who generated me and the lands, plants and creatures I love. My calling is to do whatever I can to strengthen Gaia’s regenerative, transformative powers, on behalf of all future generations of human and non-human beings.
