As the days shorten and the fruitful darkness of winter approaches, Gaia’s Blog is entering a time of renewal and growing relevance. My own thinking about Gaia and humanity—where we are now, and where we need to go—has become clearer and more incisive. And also more hopeful—which might be surprising, considering the state of the world right now.
Here’s the hope: How can we possibly go wrong by allying ourselves with Mother Earth, with the vast reality of Gaia? With our home planet’s deep, unstoppable regenerative force? In the short term—well, things might get pretty dicey before they get better. The human world and the natural world are both presently suffering widespread, grievous losses, and, given their tragic momentum, the losses and the suffering will probably continue for a while yet.
But, even so, what choice do we have? When we allow our souls to guide us toward becoming fully who we are, we inevitably come to know ourselves as participating members of Gaia’s boundless lifeweb—and heirs to Her irresistible Green Force. This force is the beating heart of the entire physical-spiritual biosphere, and sustains our own green hearts. It is the ultimate source of harmony, love, and wholeness. We can all choose to flow with this force to help us seed a more resilient, inclusive future.
Part of making this choice also involves choosing not to accept or align with the values of the modern, human-centered world. These values—human supremacy, patriarchy and misogyny, domination and violence, and grotesque over-consumption—are being collectively acted out everywhere, in ways large and small. And they are completely useless in helping either humans or the natural world to go in any positive direction.
So what we need is twofold. We need to make ourselves into vehicles for Gaia’s infinite, life-affirming intelligence and power; and we need to consciously unhook ourselves from the limiting, life-denying values of today’s dominant human culture. Inspiring and guiding us in these two interwoven tasks has always been the mission of Gaia’s Blog, and this will continue more strongly than ever.
….And a New Site! In keeping with my renewed conviction about this work, I’m excited to announce that the Gaia’s Blog website will be undergoing substantial renovation. I’m starting to consult with Elizabeth McMartin, my long-time art director, to improve and update the site. It will soon become more beautiful, creative, and accessible, and thereby more compelling. In the meantime, the present site will still be up and available.
It’s a great blessing to have you-all along on this journey. May our green hearts thrive!
